Requirements for the 10-Week Landscape Painting Course – In-Studio & Plein Air Painting
Join our 10-week landscape painting course to master the art of capturing breathtaking landscapes in oil paints. This comprehensive course begins with 5 in-studio lessons, followed by 5 weeks of plein air painting in outdoor locations. Whether you're a beginner or an intermediate artist, this course will guide you through the techniques necessary to create realistic, expressive landscapes.
Course Requirements:
  1. Art Supplies: Students will need the following art materials for both in-studio and plein air lessons:
    • Oil paints (a recommended palette including titanium white, ultramarine blue, cadmium red, cadmium yellow, burnt umber, and viridian green)
    • Brushes (variety of flat and round brushes for detail and broad strokes)
    • Palette (for mixing oils)
    • Palette knives (for creating texture and mixing paint)
    • Canvas or canvas boards (medium to large-sized canvases)
    • Rags or paper towels (for cleaning brushes and wiping excess paint)
    • Easel (for plein air painting – lightweight and portable)
    • Portable plein air setup (including a plein air easel, field box for paints, and painting board)
  2. Drawing Materials: Before starting with painting, students will need basic drawing materials to sketch out compositions:
    • Graphite pencils (soft and hard for various effects)
    • Charcoal or Conte crayons (for shading and blocking in values)
    • Sketchbook for outdoor studies and planning compositions
  3. Basic Drawing Skills: Students should have an understanding of basic drawing principles, including landscape composition, light, shadow, and proportions. This foundation will help you transition more easily from in-studio painting to plein air.
  4. Commitment to Outdoor Painting: Since plein air painting requires painting outdoors in various conditions, students should be prepared for outdoor elements. Please bring appropriate outdoor clothing, sunscreen, and a hat for comfort during the 5 weeks of plein air painting.
  5. Willingness to Learn: The plein air painting portion of the course offers unique challenges and learning opportunities. Students should come with an open mind, ready to embrace feedback and experiment with new techniques in outdoor environments.
  6. In-Studio Location: The first 5 lessons of the course will take place in the Chrome Street Studios in Salisbury, where you’ll learn the foundational techniques for landscape painting in oils. The remaining 5 lessons will be held at various plein air painting locations in the Greater Brisbane Area, allowing you to paint from life and experience the natural world as an artist.
Additional Recommendations:
  • Wear old clothes or an apron as oil painting can be messy.
  • Bring a comfortable plein air setup for outdoor painting sessions.
  • If you’re new to plein air painting, let us know so we can guide you on selecting the right equipment.
By the end of this 10-week landscape painting course, you’ll have developed the skills to create dynamic, realistic landscapes both in the studio and outdoors. You’ll learn to capture the essence of nature, work with oil paints, and explore the challenges and rewards of painting plein air.
Sign up now and take your landscape painting skills to the next level—combine studio techniques with the excitement of outdoor painting in this immersive course.
